An Avalanche of Facebook

'Tentative 'yikes!''

'Less tentative 'yikes!''
I had absolutely no idea that Facebook was so alive and kicking – believe me, I am exhausted from having taken a real-first tentative step in there…I say real-first as about a year and a half ago or so I signed up there but never bothered to get involved nor do the find friend thingy with my e-mail address book. – it was just laziness I suppose or me thinking – the blog’s the place for me-anyway, I probably still would have been Facebook ignorant of goings-ons if it hadn’t been for a casual comment that Arlene made in an e-mail to me: my time is taken up with Facebook and have a look yourself type of line. (Arlene, on your head be the consequences then ; ))
And good grief, there is a whole world happening in there and here was me, all this time sitting-pretty on my blog thinking, ‘this is it’…it is no exaggeration to say that between finding friends and accepting friendships, I didn’t get to sleep till near 2 am and as for wall-writing I’ve left a few messages here and there but I can see that it is a world apart in there and I have not an inkling as to how to go about keeping up where it will not involve reducing sleeping hours or simply whacking some other aspect of my life on the head and going hell for leather in there…seriously though, it is an overwhelming place and I’m quite excited about exploring its possibilities but 'dear lord' I can see how it might become addictive, people have already warned me about that…so maybe I’ll just take it easy and put my feet up on the Facebook couch with a keep-polishing-the-silver style of participating. : )
Would be interested to hear others reactions to Facebook as I can totally see the fun and keeping-up-with-people joy in it as well as the taking-over element ...How do you find it? How do you use it? What's your opinion of it, in general?

On the whole I find it a bit pointless since most of my friends on Facebook I communicate with either by comments on blogs, by e-mail or in person. I find a lot of what goes on there childish and apart from a friend I discovered on one of the groups it's been a bit of a waste of time. Sometimes it's a way of sending a message when I don't have a real e-mail address. I only check it about once a week and I'm never quite sure what I'm supposed to be doing with it.
I only got a FB profile because I wanted to have a look at it and you can't without joining (unlike MySpace). I don't like the layout and whole look of it and I don't like all that 'so and so has just wiped their arse' side of it. If I had a boring office job, on the other hand, I'm sure I would use it more often.
I prefer MySpace (lots of music, less scrabble) and just these old blogs. Less boxed in.

Facebook is the new crack. I hate MySpace. It's so 2007. ;-)
Hi Liz,I'm only just getting to grips with me new-born blogger let alone facebook.I'm a Luddite and find computers a necessary evil.I'm locked in constant battle with my malevolent Dell which conspires against me at every turn. You wouldn't believe how close I've come to fecking it through the window.I wouldn't have the first notion about facebook, but I'll admit to being curious.
Jim, hi and welcome. Thanks for your interesting comments; I understand what you are saying. I suppose it depends on what each person is looking for…I must admit to quite liking it so far – it seems to be a place for general banter and even a bit of harmless mischief (I just got superpoked…must react in some way; )) I like the fact that it has a place to store photos and categorise them and the whole sort of world-view it gives of who is up to what is kind of nice…having said all that though, I don’t mean to get too hooked. I like Blogger for more substantial and serious chats.
Hi Rachel, yeah, that ‘what are you doing now’ question had me a bit flummoxed at first, it has a sort of big brother feel …. ; ) but I have succumbed the once so far …and probably will again ; )!
The nice thing about Facebook was actually finding folk I had lost touch with…I can see the benefits of it for sure…and as I said to Jim, it’s like a massive bantering place with the odd bit of devilment thrown in….I’m a newbie so can’t say how I’ll end up using it or if the initial feeling of ‘it’s’ nice’ will wear off. But MySpace, I know for sure it’s not for me, all the advertisements and the pushing for friendship is too aggressive, it’s a bit mad really…but having said that I only have been there maybe five or six times and never really got the length of participating.
Collin, hi, …like your use of the word ‘crack’…you know the Irish meaning of it being ‘good fun’ or ‘craic’ as we say in Gaelic …that does sum up Facebook for me so far..; )
TFE, I think you’d like Facebook – the old computer skills don’t matter – I had to power up my dodgy and tottery laptop to upgrade Flash in order to see what getting poked meant!!! Like I said before, it’s fun…a bit like a big school yard for adults!! ; )
A bit addictive at the start, but you get the hang of it, like blogger. Look me up there :)
I dip in and out, know most of what is going on through the email alerts anyway...
Hi Barbara, yeah, it's like the flush of new love at the start...I like the photo grouping possibilities, not to mention that I've gone and got myself a pet...; ) Mad or what!! ; )
Will look you up.
After a month on Facebook, I had twice as many "friends" as I do blog followers after a year of blogging. It's great for making connections, but I can't work of the writing jones like I can with blogging.
Hi again K, yeah, I've found it good for finding people I had previously lost touch with.
